Planning Commissioner Carolyn Chase throws hat in ring for City Council

SAN DIEGO, CA, AUGUST 12, 2005 – San Diego Planning Commissioner Carolyn Chase tossed her hat into the ring to run for the City Council District 2 seat in the November 8, Special Election. Chase filed nominating papers at Friday, August 12, in the city clerk's office.

"I'm proud to announce that I'm throwing my hat into the ring and offering my skills and experience to the people of San Diego as their representative for City Council District 2," said Chase, a resident of District 2 for 25 years.

"I have the skills and experience required to change business as usual and rebuild the public's trust in City Hall," said Chase. "I know how to restore integrity to the political processes that have spun out of control over the past decade due either to neglect or manipulation."

As top priorities, Chase cites "fiscal accountability, responsibility and transparency; balancing growth; community needs and infrastructure; building public trust, and conservation and efficiency."

Chase pledges "to do the public's business in public, and only participate in closed sessions where the city council can identify exactly what's confidential and why. I will tell the truth and instruct all of my staff that they are to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, and to answer all reasonable questions from the public--in writing, if requested. I will urge the mayor and all other offices to adopt this standard."

Amplifying Chase's qualifications, she says, "I'm up-to-speed on the issues and the people. I have a record of accomplishment and demonstrated principles. Over the past 15 years in varying capacities I've interacted directly with staff as a community volunteer with almost all city departments and have a good sense of what works and what doesn't work in the city and why.

"As a Planning Commissioner," says Chase, "I have reviewed almost every project requiring a discretionary hearing during the last three years and I'm familiar with all the applicable plans – and perhaps
more importantly, how they are applied or not applied."

Chase is the founder of the Earth Day Network and San Diego Earth Works, which stages the annual Earth Fair, observance in Balboa Park. The Earth Day event is the largest of its type in the world.

Chase's past experience includes: Move San Diego and Rollable Communities founder, San Diego Sierra Club chair, San Diego Environmental Advisory Committee chair, San Diego Citizen's Task Force on Recycling member, City Waste Management Advisory Board chair; City Waste Reduction and Recycling Task Force member.

Chase has also served as a member of the Regional Comprehensive Plan, Stakeholders Working Group; Regional Transportation Plan Citizen's Advisory Committee, County of San Diego General Plan 2020 Interest Group, Stakeholders Working Group; and Citizen's Advisory Committee for the Regional Transportation Plan, Mobility 2030.

Raised in Los Angeles, Carolyn moved to San Diego in 1975 to attend UC San Diego. She graduated from Revelle College with a degree in Computer Science, and a minor in music. She has been a member of the La Jolla Symphony Chorus since 1975. Carolyn lives in Pacific Beach with her husband. The couple own and operate Earth Media, Inc., a multi-service consulting firm incorporated in 1993.
