Toni's Bio

Toni Atkins is a candidate for the Third District City Council seat in San Diego. She is running for the open seat to replace City Councilmember Christine Kehoe, whose term ends in December 2000 because of term limits.

For more than a decade, Atkins has been an effective San Diego community leader. She has served as the Executive Vice President of the San Diego Democratic Club, and in past years has been appointed to the Gay & Lesbian Advisory Boards of former Mayor Maureen O'Conner and former City Councilmember Bob Filner. Toni's community involvement includes her work as the Chair of the Coalition for Reproductive Choice and former Clinic Director of Womancare Clinic and the Los Angeles Feminist Women's Health Center.

As a senior policy analyst and aide for Christine Kehoe, Atkins has tackled a broad range of issues that reflect the priorities of the district she wishes to represent. These include solving residential traffic problems, providing affordability housing, helping to reduce overcrowding in our neighborhood schools, supporting before-and-after school programming for kids, undergrounding overhead utility lines, working to reduce crime, and repairing the aging infrastructure by fixing streets, sidewalks, and water and sewer pipes. In addition, she has worked together with small business owners to revitalize older commercial areas throughout the district.

Atkins finished last year on a strong note announcing key endorsements from the San Diego Police Officers Association, the San Diego County Apartment Association, the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and the Building Industry Association. These endorsements, in addition to the previous endorsements for Atkins by the San Diego Firefighters, Local 145, the San Diego Democratic Club, Councilmembers Christine Kehoe and Juan Vargas, and past San Diego Unified School Board President Ron Ottinger, further establish Atkins as the front-runner going into the March 7th primary.

Toni is originally from Southwestern Virginia. She graduated from Emory & Henry College with a degree in political science with a focus on community organizing. She owns a home in North Park and has been a District Three resident for 14 years.
